The Calgary Data for Good Chapter

Data For Good is a collective of volunteer do-gooders, who want to use their powers for good to help make our communities better through data. We help nonprofit and social organizations harness the power of their data through analytics and visualizations in order to leverage their impact in the community.

The team in Calgary is led by Geoff Zakaib and other volunteers who are committed to making an impact through data in Calgary.

How we can help

Data for Good in Calgary works with organizations in the nonprofit / social sector in a couple of ways:
  • DataThons are weekend events that involve a large number of volunteers focusing on analytics & visualizations with organizations that have a lot of data and are relatively advanced in their data practices.
  • DataCorps is a program of smaller scale projects of variable length where a group of Data Ambassadors will work with organizations that need help with data fundamentals at any stage of the Data Lifecycle.
  • Meetup presentations are held every month where speakers from various industries present on topics related to data analytics & non-profits.

Community

Community is at the heart of Data for Good, whether through in the people who create and manage not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations, in supporting the people that such organizations serve, or in our own team who simply want to do some good. Data for Good Calgary is happy to share the knowledge throughout the community and host speaking events to discuss the value of data.

Data Work

You don’t need degrees or certifications to start working with data! With some patience and open-mindedness, anyone can pick up the tools to start collecting and dissecting the multitudes of different data that are so essential to day-to-day operations. For organizations that may be overwhelmed with the amount of data to sift through and don’t know where to start, Data for Good is here.

Data Visualization Challenge #2

Sponsored by
Dataset Donated By
Our second Data Viz Challenge has officially kicked off. The purpose of this challenge is to give the opportunity to any person who is interested in data visualization to compete in a challenge. This competition will help you build your data story telling and presentation skills, or give you a chance to show off your current mad skills. The challenge is open to complete newbies and the seasoned vets. Every level of skill is wanted in this competition. Don’t worry, we will put your challenge alongside others who match your skill set.
What is a Visualization Challenge? You have up to 3 months to take a dataset, visualize it, and submit it for judging. Once submitted, we will categorize your data viz based on your skill set. Our judges select some finalists in all categories and skill levels. If you make it to the finals, you will get to show off your visualization and have it judged by other data professionals!

The outline of the challenge is listed below:

Rules:
  • We will be using the dataset of bike accidents in Regina from 2010 – 2019. Download the dataset here.
  • Download the dictionary here
  • You are allowed to use any other additional datasets you choose to include (not necessary though)
  • You are allowed to use any BI or visualization tool
  • Your submission will be a single page in PDF format
  • You can work individually or as part of a team
More Details: Send an email to regina@dataforgood.ca to enter the contest In your email, explain if you will be working solo, or want to be placed on a team If you would like to be placed on a team, please explain your skills and skill level so we can match you appropriately. Email your PDF file by midnight June 22nd, 2021 to be judged. If your visual has been selected as one of the top entries, you will have the opportunity to present at the June 2021 Data For Good Meetup on June 29th, 2021.
